President Barack Obama is the Harry Potter of politics. The charisma and appeal... The magic to bring hope and the courage to face several world-wide Voldemorts. With the flick of the wand, the economy will not be fixed. With the cast of a spell the wars will not be over. Yet, if Harry can defeat Voldemort in 7 books then these next 4 years should be interesting. After all, incantations are probably what Former Pres. Bush left for Pres. Obama in that secret envelope on the desk.
I think the best part of the day for me was Pres. Obama's speech. The words he spoke were eloquent. I can't explain it any better. But as Pres. Obama continued to speak I swear I saw a big "S" on his chest with a blue cape flapping behind him in the wind.
Listening to his speech really sunk in the idea of the US having a new president, for me. By the end his speech the hair on the back of my neck and the goosebumps on my arm were applauding and saluting. It was a good speech.
Now, the world sits in his hands and its a good thing the guy plays basketball.
Surprisingly on campus there was not much hoopla. Tables selling Obama gear and a few students sporting it. I'll have to admit my classes didn't start till 1:00 pm (on the east it was 4:00 pm) so that gave time for the buzz to kill. However, for a school so gung ho about registering to vote, I expected the inauguration to be the talk on campus. Its ok. I celebrated with Anderson, Wolf, Soledad, Campbell, Gergen, and everyone else at CNN.
So now, after this 3 day weekend and the elation of today, I return to the real world. Chemistry and physics, reports, essays... but worst of all the CNN withdrawls (from 24/7 to 2 hours of AC360).
PS:
One thing that surprised me was how much this is affecting the world. AMAZING! A lady from Africa went to Washington DC just for the inauguration. Japan, India... even Pakistan was celebrating. People from Canada were in the CNN live blog talking about how much this event meant to them. "A lending hand to those who unclench their fists". (One of the lines in his speech).
Also have to add. Hopefully Hawaii, my home, will be viewed as more than just a tourist island. We dish out more than pigs with apples... we also dish out presidents. Chee hoo!
Thanks for reading.
